Can you diffuse Thieves Essential Oil?
Diffusing Thieves essential oil is super popular.
One of the first oils I learned about when I started researching essential oils was the Young Living blend Thieves.
Back then I was still really skeptical about the whole essential oil thing and hearing the history behind Thieves oil really intrigued me.
My main reason for starting essential oils was I wanted my house to smell amazing.
In addition, I felt if my family could find added health support from diffusing Thieves then why not give it a try.
What momma doesn't want a happy healthy family? and a clean smelling house?
I don't know about you, but I'm up for a great smelling house with benefits versus paying a co-pay any day.
Also, I soon learned that for my taste, Diffusing Thieves just flat out smells amazing.
I love how it has a warm spicy scent that just makes my home smell fresh and clean. With that first try at diffusing Thieves, I was hooked! and I'm betting you will too.
In my 5 years of being with Young Living and teaching essential oils to thousands of moms, I've only come across ONE person that didn't care for the scent of Thieves.

Why diffuse essential oils?
First, diffusing essential oils is the easiest way to learn how to use essential oils.
Let's face it when it comes to applying essential oils to our skin or even ingesting them, the whole dilution factor and when and how to apply can be scary and overwhelming to someone new to using essential oils. Especially if we are using them on our family.
Where diffusing is simple and easy. You have complete control of how much essential oil gets used by adding more or less oil to the diffuser.
The act of diffusing is when you use a special machine called a diffuser that is made to dispense essential oils and water into the air as a mist.
NOTE- There is a difference between an essential oil diffuser and Humidifier that I cover in another blog post, you don't want to mess this up.
I personally love the Young Living brand of diffusers. that make it easy to control the amount of oil you want to diffuse with mist timer settings.
What are the Thieves essential oil benefits I can get when I diffuse?
Oh where to start on this? The benefits of using Thieves is so many!
Thieves essential oil blend contains a combination of amazing oils that not only do they smell fantastic but they also have some pretty impressive benefits when used aromatically aka diffusing.
Thieves is a blend of the following single oils-
- Cinnamon Bark
- Clove
- Eucalyptus Radiata
- Lemon
- Rosemary
This makes a powerful combination that includes naturally occurring constituents
- trans-cinnamaldehyde (this is in the cinnamon bark),
- Eucalyptol (found in the Eucalyptus Radiata and Rosemary)
- Limonene (lemon).
I know these are some “big” words but I encourage you to do your own research and check out the benefits.
But my favorite benefits from diffusing are that it Freshens the air of the room when it is diffused. I love how it can neutralize the stinkiest odors and leave my house smelling like I've been doing some baking for Thanksgiving. If you love the scent of pumpkin spice you will be so happy to diffuse this oil.
But I can't forget to mention the benefit of diffusing thieves for supporting my family's wellness.
I mentioned earlier about the history of Thieves and how it's blend is based on the Legend of four 15-century grave robbers during the plague.
The Young Living Thieves brand has even been accepted and approved for use by the FDA in cough drop and chest rub form as a way to soothe sore throats and relieve coughs.
Proving that Thieves can be so pretty awesome stuff.
I now won't be without the whole Thieves brand of products to help with my family's wellness support.

How do you diffuse Thieves Essential Oil?
I love how simple the process of diffusing Thieves can be. But I want to caution first timers.
Do NOT be like me!
The first time I diffused essential oils I royally screwed up. I got excited and let's just say I used way more drops than anyone person should ever use all at once.
If you want to know how to diffuse essential oils and not screw up you should check my post on it.
but the simple process to diffuse Thieves oil is
- Add water to your diffuser to the fill line
- Put your drops of Thieves oil in the diffuser
- Replace the top of your diffuser and turn on.
There are two different labels for Thieves can I diffuse both?
Yes, you can diffuse the white label Young Living Thieves and the darker brownish red labeled Thieves.
They are the exact same oil.
The only difference is the label. Why two labels?
In the US, our governing body called the FDA will not let Young Living label an essential oil bottle with three different uses. So the white-labeled oils are apart of the vitality oil line which is labeled ingestible while the colored labels are labeled for diffusing and topical use. But they are all the same oil.
How many drops of Thieves essential oil do I put in my diffuser?
Diffusing allows you to control the strength of the oil you use by how many drops you use. You put more drops for a stronger scent and less drops for a lighter scent.
But the key is also understanding the size of your room. the smaller the room the less amount of oil you want to use.
I personally only add 2-4 drops for oil to the diffuser in a room that is 300sq feet. Less oil if it's a smaller room.
If you are new to using essential oils I would only use 1-2 until you have a chance to try it a couple of times. Then slowly work your way up.
Can you put too many drops of Thieves essential oil in a diffuser?
the short answer YES.
Trust me a little goes a long way no matter what essential oil you use. Too much of any oil is NEVER a good thing.
If your eyes begin to water and burn, you have too much Thieves oil in your diffuser.
If the scent is overwhelming, makes you cough or makes it hard to breathe it is too much oil in your diffuser or you are having an allergic reaction to the oil.
Stop the diffuser immediately – if either of the above happens.
after stopping the diffuser open door ways and let fresh air enter the space and have everyone step outside.
If you feel that your reaction to diffusing Thieves is due to an allergic reaction seek medical help and discontinue using Thieves essential oil.
but if it is a simple mistake of just too much oil I have a way to fix it.
How do I fix the diffuser if I added to much thieves oil?
Fixing an over abundance of Thieves in a diffuser is way easier to fix than you might think.
Just remember-
Dilution is the Solution.
First find a glass jar large enough to hold all the liquid in the diffuser plus more.
Second, pour the entire diffuser mix into the jar.
Lastly, add more water to the jar to dilute the original mix.
I will add more water as many times as I need to get the mix to where the Essential oil is not too strong.
Finally, I add my newly diluted Thieves and water mix back into my diffuser and try again to diffuse. If it's still too strong, I just do the dilution process above again till I get it right.
Is it safe to diffuse Thieves essential oil around kids?
I love diffusing Thieves around my kids so they get all the health support benefits that Thieves has to offer.
First, I keep to just 2-3 drops of Thieves when I know they will be in the room and I make sure it's well ventilated. Our rooms are typically larger than 300sq feet for this amount. I am using a diffuser that is made for a 300sq ft room.
Second, I also put the diffuser across the room from them and not right in their area of play or rest.
In addition to the above, if your diffuser has an intermittent setting you may want to select that option so the Thieves oil is dispersed a little slower into the room.
All the newer Young Living Diffusers have this intermittent option.
If I see watery eyes or hear them clear their throat I will turn off the diffuser.
I do need to mention a few things of note-
Thieves does contain a few oils that I would caution using around babies and small children under two.
This is not to say you can not diffuse if it's your personal decision but I always ere on the side of an overabundance of Essential Oil safety.
The oils Clove, Cinnamon bark, and Eucalyptus should be used with caution around infants and babies. Furthermore, Rosemary should also be used with caution for kids too.
Can I diffuse Thieves essential oil around my pets?
Diffusing Thieves around pets is a lot like diffusing around kids.
I would again diffuse only 2-3 drops in a room of 300sq ft.
Make sure your pet has access to leave the room and get away from the diffuser.
Make sure the room is well ventilated and the diffuser is placed across the room from your pet's favorite spot.
Watch your pet for any signs of discomfort and if you see them in distress, remove them first from the room and allow them to get fresh air.
To resume diffusing thieves essential oil, dilute your oil and water mix as I shared above.
Can I leave my diffuser on all night?
I know many people who love sleeping with their diffuser running all night.
However, it honestly doesn't mean they are doing it safely.
Personally, I will fill my diffuser and let it run most of the night with my bedroom door open.
For example, I also use a minimum amount of oil 1-2 drops and the diffuser is small for the size of our bedroom.
Because oil and water don't mix so most of the essential oil in the diffuser is on the top. With only 1-2 drops it gets dispersed pretty quickly and the rest of the water is more for humidifying the room.
Can you sleep with a diffuser on while you diffuse Thieves essential oil?
The Young Living site specifies for the Aromatic use of Thieves- Diffuse up 6-8 drops for up to 10 minutes 3 times daily.
Using the intermittent setting along with minimal drops may be a safe way to diffuse as long as your room size is larger than the specified size for the diffuser.
What can I diffuse with thieves?

- Orange,
- Tangerine,
